Biography

Hazel Business Law founder Karen A. Hazel earned her law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, graduating magna cum laude. She is the recipient of three CALI (outstanding academic achievement in a class) awards: Persuasive Writing, Employment Discrimination and Misdemeanor Clinic – Prosecution.

Prior to attending law school, she worked as a senior marketing and communications professional on Wall Street, leading and managing major marketing initiatives for some of the nation’s top asset managers. In 2002, she launched her own small business, Hazel Communications, LLC, providing marketing services to a client base comprised of Fortune 500 financial services and banking clients.

During and after law school, Karen clerked for City of Edina Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office in both Rice and Washington Counties, and various solo and small law firms, gaining valuable experience in legal writing, client representation and the workings of the court system. In 2011-2012 she devoted over 100 hours of pro bono service in the family law arena for the Volunteer Lawyers Network.

Karen is an active member of the American Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association, the Hennepin County Bar Association, and a past member of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association. She is the recipient of the Minnesota State Bar Association Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz Child Advocate and Service Award, and the City of Edina Human Rights Commission’s Tom Oye Award for outstanding community service.
